Google Business Profile vs. a Website: Does Your Ontario Small Business Need Both?

"I already show up on Google, I don't need a website." It's one of the most common things we hear from small business owners around Wasaga Beach, Barrie, and the rest of Georgian Bay, and it usually means one thing: a Google Business Profile with a pin on the map, a few reviews, and maybe some photos. That's a real asset, and it's worth having. But it's not the same thing as a website, and treating it as a replacement quietly costs businesses customers every week.

What a Google Business Profile actually does

A Google Business Profile (the listing you see on Google Maps and in local search results, formerly called Google My Business) is free, and it's genuinely useful. It shows your business name, address, phone number, hours, a handful of photos, and customer reviews directly on Google, without anyone having to click through anywhere else. For someone searching "bakery near me" on their phone, that's often exactly what they need: a quick answer, directions, and a number to call.

That convenience is also its limit. A Google Business Profile is a listing, not a home base. You don't own it the way you own a domain and a website; Google controls the format, the layout, and the rules, and it can change how your listing looks or behaves at any time. You can't add a real price list, a full portfolio of your work, a detailed FAQ, or a booking flow built around how your business actually operates. You get a handful of fields, and everyone in your industry gets the same handful of fields.

Why "I already show up on Maps" isn't the same as having a website

Showing up on Google Maps means a customer can find your location and maybe your phone number. It doesn't mean they can learn how your pricing works, see examples of past jobs, read your full story, or find the specific service they need buried three levels deep in what you offer. A website is where a curious searcher turns into an informed customer, and a Google Business Profile alone rarely gets someone that far.

There's also a credibility gap. A business with only a Maps listing, no matter how many stars it has, reads as smaller and less established than one with a clean, professional website behind it. Customers have learned to expect a real site to click through to, especially for anything above a small, low-stakes purchase, like hiring a contractor, booking a spa treatment, or choosing a restaurant for a special occasion.

What a website adds that a listing can't

A website gives you ownership. Nobody can suspend your domain because of an automated flag, change your layout overnight, or bury you under a competitor's paid ad. It's yours, permanently, and it's the one piece of your online presence you fully control.

It also gives you real SEO control. A Google Business Profile helps you rank in the local map pack, but a website is what lets you rank for the specific phrases your customers actually type, like "custom deck builder Wasaga Beach" or "dog groomer Collingwood." Each page you build is a chance to answer a real question a real customer is searching for, something a five-field business listing simply can't do.

And a website captures the details a listing physically can't hold: a full menu, a gallery of finished projects, staff bios, a clear breakdown of services and pricing, a contact form that lands directly in your inbox instead of a public review thread. It's the difference between a business card and an actual conversation.

The honest answer: most businesses need both, working together

This isn't really an either-or decision. Your Google Business Profile is what gets you discovered on Maps and in local search, and your website is where that discovery turns into trust and, eventually, a booking or a sale. The two should point at each other: your listing links to your website, and your website reinforces the same name, address, and phone number Google already has on file for you. Businesses that only have a listing are leaving the second half of that job undone, and businesses that only have a website without a claimed, optimized Google Business Profile are missing easy, free local visibility.
